Plumber vs. DIY — When to Call a Pro

Some plumbing jobs are great for a handy homeowner. Others can turn a small problem into a very expensive one. Here’s how to know the difference.

DIY is fine for: replacing a showerhead, fixing a running toilet flapper, unclogging a slow drain with a plunger, or replacing a faucet aerator.

Call a plumber for: anything involving your main water line, low pressure throughout the house, water heater issues, persistent clogs that don’t clear, sewage smells, or any visible leak inside the wall or ceiling.

Never DIY: gas line work, anything requiring a permit, or any job where you’re not 100% sure what you’re looking at. The cost of a professional is always less than the cost of a mistake.
